Isabella Smales grew up in York and went on to read Philosophy and Theology at Oxford Brookes University. She was a choral scholar at Oriel College, Oxford; whilst studying with the singer and teacher Jean Allister. Her current singing teacher is the renowned soprano Fiona Dobie with whom she is studying for the Licentiate from the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM).
Her first major performance was on BBC Radio 4’s “Daily Service” conducted by Gordon
Stewart in July 2001. In the summer of 2003 she attended the Tallis Scholars summer
school in Oakham under the direction of Peter Philips, with master-
March 2004 saw Isabella competing at the Harrogate Festival of Music, Speech and Drama, at which she achieved the gold medal in the Oratorio class and 2nd and 3rd places respectively in Leider and 20th Century British Song classes. In September 2004 she joined Concentio Chamber Choir, Oxford – performing at Exeter College, Oxford and in Trafalgar Square.
During 2005 she again attended the Tallis Scholars summer school in Oakham, the completion of which was an evensong at Kings College, Cambridge. In September she joined Oriel College Choir, Oxford as a chorister – this included a performance at Guildford Cathedral. August 2006 included a tour to Paris, during which she performed at Notre Dame Cathedral and Saint Sulpice church with Oriel College Choir.
2007 included a CD release of scared choral works in which she gave a solo performance in Britten’s ‘Hymn to a Virgin’ with Oriel College Choir, Oxford. July saw her travel to Poland to sing at the World Heritage site of Wieliczka Salt Cathedral, Krakow. 2008 has seen her travel to the USA on a 2 week tour of the East Coast with a mixed programme of religious choral music.
In addition to the above choral commitments and various professional engagements, Isabella has given solo performances including: Faure’s ‘Pie Jesu’ at York Minster, Haydn’s ‘Little Organ Mass’ at Oriel College, and a new arrangement of Bach’s ‘Watchet Auf’.
